      HISTORY,FUN AND HOSPITALITY!!!

We invite you to visit McDowell County, the home of many unsung heroes. Coal miners, war veterans and your everyday hard working person is what makes up the core of our McDowell County communities.  Given these strong people have forged many beautiful vistas among the rugged terrain, we have many attractions we wish to share. Among these are the best ATV riding trails you will find in the region with coalfied heritage landmarks throughout the area that represent our history. McDowell County offers unique festivals with great down home cooking, unusual vendors and mountain hospitality.

We invite you to come and visit the home of the "Rocket Boys" in Coalwood WV, where they were born and raised and later helped our nation reach to the stars. McDowell County has been called the "coal bucket of the nation" as we have supplied the high grade mineral to industries that provide power to our homes and the defense of our country.  Our terrain is rugged and beautiful and we invite you to share in the panorama of an area that is proud of its heritage, struggling to improve and hopeful for a future filled with prosperity. For the experience of a lifetime, come visit McDowell County.

McDowell County has some of the best big game Whitetail Deer hunting you will find anywhere. We also are known for our Black Bear population that lives in the valleys and forests of one of nature's most beautiful areas.

So bring your ATV and ride the Hatfield/McCoy Trail, with a trailhead opening near Northfork, WV. We have some of the best ATV riding trails around. Bring your camper or your tent or you can stay in one of the cabins at the KOA Campground in Ashland, near the trailhead.  You can also purchase your licenses and other equipment at this location.

McDowell County is home to the only memorial in the nation honoring African American soldiers in World War I.  The building has just been totally restored and stands as a beautful reminder of the sacrifices of our citizens during wartime. It is located on Route 52 in Kimball, WV.

Also, McDowell County has the distinction of being the home of Minnie Buckingham Harper (R-McDowell). She became the first female African-American state legislator in the United States when she was appointed to the West Virginia House of Delegates on January 10, 1928 by Governor Howard Gore.  Mrs. Harper was named to fill the vacancy caused by the death of her husband.
